I didn’t smoke when he was a newborn, but I fell back into the habit when he was around six to nine months old. It began with a quick drag just before bedtime, then after dinner and again before bed, then before dinner, in the evening and before bed, and it just kept spiraling until I was heavily using again. In the moment, I swore it didn’t affect my parenting or my attentiveness. I told myself it didn’t diminish the fact that I was a good, handsome dad, but only after I finally quit completely did I truly see how much precious time I had been stealing from him. Even when I switched to just carts, I was smoking constantly, draining my money, and feeling irritable when the stash ran low. That’s my story if you can quit, please do. Treasure the moments with your baby instead of sneaking away multiple times a day to light up.
