Any strollers with kid-controlled brakes for downhill safety?

So my four‑year‑old and I were skating down a hill. I hit a rock, managed to run it off, and we were both fine. It made me think: if I ate badly and he was free‑flying in the stroller, I wish he had hand‑brakes.

Has anybody ever heard of a stroller with breaks the kids control or am I gonna have t o ghetto rig this from some bike parts.

I’d love for it to be set up in reverse, with a handle just like a bicycle hand brake always engaged, so you have to pull and hold it to release it. That way, if I ever fell, the brake would automatically engage, stopping the stroller and keeping it from rolling downhill or into traffic.

Idk if it’d help, but my jogging stroller comes with a wrist strap you wear it, and if you take a tumble, the stroller stops on a dime. You could probably DIY one with paracord so you can set exactly how much slack you want.

You could simply walk and save skating for when someone else is pushing the stroller JUST food for thought.

I miss those days... I used to glide down the path and then stash my board under the pram and walk back... yes always annoying no brakes tho lol... and I was blindly skating too. What do you think about those carefree rides?

The simplest solution, in my heart, feels like attaching a surf‑board‑style cord from the pram to your wrist leaving a gentle slack so it won’t yank the pram when you head down.

There are strollers with brakes; just look up running strollers. Although at that age I’d probably start looking at bike options for the lil guy.

I got my lil guy on bikes early. He started with a KEY balance bike on pump tracks at age 3, and now he’s tearing it up on a dirt bike and BMX at 7.

I think you can get a stroller with a safety feature that applies the brakes when pulled.

I’m honestly picturing how fun that could be walking down the street with my kid and having to hit the brakes every 15 seconds. Ha, it makes me smile. I really think it’s a good idea, though. Maybe a breakaway strap or Bluetooth that could automatically engage the brakes if we get too far.

make it leash activated. like a jet ski key has that leash to the kill switch. It raises the question of what other safety mechanisms could be incorporated.

Treat the stroller like you’d handle a playful pup with a leash set it up so a lever must be held down to release the brake, just like a lawnmower’s safety catch. If you let go, the stroller won’t roll far, keeping things gentle and safe. Letting a child be the one in charge is a risky moe; they could unintentionally “fetch” the stroller and set it off before you’re ready, or in a pinch they might not have the strength to pull the mechanical brake hard enough. In every situation, it’s our job as the caring “parents” to stay in control of that stroller, not the little one. That’s really why we keep them right beside us.
