Soak in water until ready for use. It prevents the string from drying out and breaking.

I go with the thickest one the head can handle. Usually it’s a twisted type, but there are plenty of universal heads that let you use steel wire if you need something really strong.

Keep sampling brands, but set it to .095.
Leave it in a bucket of water until you use it.
This stops it from becoming brittle.

I tend to use the thick stuff, though I wonder if that's the best choice. I don’t go thinner than .105, but I seem to prefer .130. However, I find myself dealing with brush clearing more than just grass or weed trimming, perhaps because I live in a coastal desert that appears prone to wildfire.
