Old house with 2-prong outlets—should I upgrade to GFCI or full rewire?

I recently bought my first house. It is older, and most outlets are two‑prong. An electrician told me I can replace the outlets with GFCIs. I am certain the house isn’t fully grounded. Is it overkill to replace all outlets, or should I update the electrical system? I know that would be expensive.

Figure out what type of wire you have.

If it’s cloth coating, I would change it all.

Do you have a fuse box or a breaker panel?

If it’s plastic coated, then GFCI are fine.

If you’re planning on being in the house long‑term, I would change it to all new electrical.

Yo, you don’t gotta have every outlet be a GFI, and GFI don’t even need a ground to work 😅. It’s that unbalanced load between hot and neutral that trips the GFI 🔌.

One GFCI receptacle can lovingly protect everything downstream from it. The code kindly asks you to place a sticker on the outlets that are GFCI‑proteced so they can be clearly identified. You could choose to install a GFCI circuit breaker instead of a receptacle, giving the whole circuit a gentle layer of protection. Just be sure you aren’t sharing a neutral between two circuits if you are, you’ll need a GFCI at each receptacle.

If you don’t need a three‑prong outlet at every spot, it’s perfectly fine to keep the two‑prong version as long as it remains in good condition. Many tools and appliances are double‑insulated and don’t require a ground.
