Which state is best for us: Texas, South Carolina, or Montana?

I’m looking for input. My wife and I want to leave Washington. It’s too expensive, and we disagree with the policies. We’re torn between Texas, South Carolina, and Montana. I’d love a clear lits of pros and cons for each! Regarding the job market, I’m a disabled veteran with heavy‑equipment experience, a passion for firearms, and a knack for working with my hands.

From what I understand, South Carolina offers many perks for disabled veterans. It also has fairly firearm‑friendly laws. I live in North Carolina, and I have family in South Carolina.

Corpus Christi, TX hosts many refineries and industrial sites. Look up Bay Ltd, Turner Industries, kiewat to name a few. Bechtel also runs a large new construction job here, though I’m not sure of its progress. Southeast Houston, Beaumont, and Baytown have abundant industrial work, but you would have to live there.

I hate to admit it, but Tennessee’s got a ton of rock quarries, and we’re in need of equipment operators and maintenance folks where I work especially at my quarry.

I don’t t hink Montana is much cheaper. But those winters…fuq that.

When we left the Chicago area, Dallas, TX & Charlotte, NC were on our short list. We ended up in NC. Hindsight, should’ve given more thought to SC. Geography is great close enough to mountains or the coast for a weekend trip. SC taxes and the overall cost of living are better.

Keep in mind the specific areas you’re looking at within each state. Even in a big metro like Dallas, you’ll still run into some of the politics you’re trying to dodge on a more local level.

So my vote for you would be the Greenville area.

Texas, definitely. No state taxes and very military‑friendly. Plenty of VA clinics if you're eligible. The Hill Country is beautiful and more temperate. Large cities are becoming expensive, though. I lived in San Antonio for a year and loved it. Cheers!

My wife and I find ourselves in the midst of relocating from Iowa to Texas, and I wonder how the oil fields might be appealing to someone with heavy‑equipment experience. I’m also struck by the abundance of benefits available to disabled veterans, such as property‑tax exemptions.

Oklahoma is another good option. I pay $1,150 in rent, and the property is incredibly nice.
