I find myself in a tight spot, if that makes sense. A brief backstory: my son and I left my ex over a year ago, and we moved into my mom’s place to help both her and myself. I’ve started talking with an amazing woman, and my son seems to like her a lot, even though she lives in a different state. Now, six months into our conversations and budding relationship, my lady friend is expressing a desire to move into our own place and to transition into what feels like a real relationship, not just texts and phone calls. I want to be clear that my son comes before everyone else.
I’ve been wrestling with a few thoughts. She has raised several red flags for me, annd I’m aware that I tend to overthink things, so perhaps I’m being overly cautious. I do want companionship and I miss having a partner, yet I’m uncertain about the idea of moving in with someone. I’d like to have a place of my own for my son and me, while also not wanting to miss out on something that could be great.
I love my mom deeply, but she’s also draining my finances. I’ve increased my income and work hours to support her, yet this means I’m losing precious time with my son because of work. I want to move out, but every time an issue arises I end up dipping into my savings.
I know being a solo dad is incredibly challenging—what would you all do?
