How do I handle the title when gifting a car from Ohio to Georgia?

I live in Georgia.
Relative is giving a used car to my 17 yo son.
We’ll pick up the car in Ohio, drive it in Ohio for a week, then drive it back home to GA.

Advice for h ow to handle title at time of pickup?
Keep old plates and have a signed bill of sale on hand?
Use $0 as the sales price?
Help?

I’ve found that I have to say it was a gift, otherwise the DMV will Kelly blue book it and then use that price to calculate the taxes. As for driving, it really depends on the tags something I’ve been trying to figure out.

You can probably get an Ohio temp tag. I don’t think there’s a grace period on transfers, so I’d just call the BMV and ask.

Give the new Carlisle BMV a call they never seem to be busy or hop over to oplates.com, where I think there’s a checklist and a live‑chat option.

I am not certain how the process works in Ohio, but I have purchased several cars for $1 here in Louisiana. The title can serve as the bill of sale. They will request the vehicle’s value, although that amount is not used to calculate taxes. The state may require the surrender of the old plates. However, the title company should provide a temporary tag.

I can share what I might do if I were living in NY and buying an out‑of‑state car, though I’m not certain it’s the only approach.

You could ask for the title and the (partially completed) bill of sale to be sent to you. You might note that you paid $75. It may be wise to obtain the VIN and the vehicle information before you go to pick it up. Insuring it seems prudent. Then you could take the title and bill of sale to the DMV to register the car. They would likely give you plates, which you could install when you arrive. It’s probably a good idea to verify that the title isn’t signed in the wrong places or showing any liens before you insure it.

If you buy a car and say it’s a gift, they’ll use the KBB value!
If you buy a car below the KBB value, they still use the KBB value.

Ga is going to charge you 7% of the cars value. Not much you can do.

From what I know might differ by county take this with a grain of salt, but my tag office used the KBB value instead of the car’s sale price. I paid $6,500 for mine, and it KBB’d for a lot more.

In Missouri, the seller fills out a gift affidavit. I’d call your local DMV they’ll know.

If you're a GA resident, they don’t care what you say you paid they tax you based on the car’s book value. You can use an online calculator to get an estimate of what you’ll owe.

You must pay tax on it when you register in GA, based on the declared value.

Do not write “gift” or “$0 sale.” Georgia will tax you based on its KBB value. Put $300.00. If anyone asks, say it was a favor to your son from a family member. Go to the Ohio DMV and ask for a paper tag for transport, then title the vehicle in Georgia when you get it home.

I have always set the sale price at $100–$500. Usually, presenting it as a gift still subjects it to tax based on market value.

Under Ohio law, if you have a notarized title and a license plate from a licensed, insured vehicle, you can use that plate for 30 days.

I’m not sure how this would work in other states for you to get fully home, though.
