Howdy fellow dad bruhs, my wife and I need advice on handling this. We were playing catch when she stepped outside, announced she was heading to the grocery store, and hinted she wanted me to join, muscly, to grab water and dog food—“the more the merrier,” she said. I told my son to load up; we’re going with Mom and baby sister. HERES THE SITUATION FOR THOSE WHO WANNA SKIP READING Son (8) tossed the ball toward the house, shouted “oh come on!” and shattered the front window’s outer pane. I stared, then said, “dude, eally? Let’s be big boys, no temper tantrums. If you broke that window I’m gonna be VERY upset with you. You’re not gonna like that decision later.” I walked over, saw the broken pane, and told him I need time to think of his punishment. Here I am, seeking wisdom from fellow dad bruhs!

I put my kid in “time out.” They stand in a corner, stare straight ahead, and aren’t allowed to turn their head if they do, the timeout gets longer. No one gets hit; they hate it, and it keeps them in check ✅ somewhat.

Honestly, the fact that you didn’t panic right away and are looking for advice says a lot about your parenting skills. Nice job. I’d suggest having him help you fix it while teaching him that all our actions have consequences, even if they’re unintentional. This is a good chance to show that saying sorry doesn’t magically fix something that’s broken.

Ask him what he’s tryna sell to cover it. 🤔 Figure out a contractor’s rate, then tally up all his “toys” for an equal value. That’ll give him a price point he gets. 👍

I’m all about teaching kids to fix a problem they caused, aas long as I know the fix. 👍 If they punch a hole in the wall, they’ll sit down and learn how to patch it. 🙌 Break a glass cup? They’ll learn the danger and help clean up. Spill milk? They’ll help mop it up. 🧼 Obviously a window might be a bit much for an 8‑yr‑old, but maybe you can work something out with this idea. Otherwise, just add more chores to “cover it.” 🧹

I'm not sure how old the kid is or how handy you are, but this could be a good chance for him to pitch in on fixing the window and see everything that goes into a replacement not just the money, but measuring the frame, getting quotes, and so on.

It would be fair to have him cover some of the cost, but showing him how much work it takes to fix what he broke would be priceless.

Because he's your son, he looks to you for guidance. He should see you handling problems wherever they pop up. Doesn't look like you overreacted good news. I'd sit down and lay it out for him: as men, we gotta keep our emotions in check. I'd warn him that if he pulls that stunt again, you'll have to call in a hard reset you don't want. End the chat there. Then have him help fix the window and grind off the repair cost. You set the hourly rate. I get that you want to show love through the whole grind. Keep teaching him how to be a real man no NPC's gonna do it for him.

I find myself recalling that whenever I broke something, I had to either work off the cost or repair it. My father, being a carpenter, usually helped me fix it, though when it came to glass it meant a new sash. I would buy it. I would have him work it off. I would ask him to replace it with me. In the real world, one must either fix mistakes or pay for them to be fixed. It seems a valuable lesson to learn. Natural consequences.

If he broke the window, he should pay to fix it.

I would give him age‑appropriate chores so he can earn the money to repair what he broke.

He’s 8, so make the chores age appropriate.

So he was having FUN with you, yet his mom wouldn’t let him spend time alone with you and couldn’t mmanage a store trip by herself.
How often does she pull this CRAP so he can’t even have FUN with his dad?
And it doesn’t sound like he threw it to the window, just toward the house.
Just have him CLEAN it up.
You don’t need to PUNISH your kid for everything.
And if you can’t think of a “punishment” without asking the Internet, you have FAILED as a father.

Yeah he can’t do that. But it’s Xmas… so make em work for his punishment make him do all the chores instead of grounding him. Keep em busy tomorrow.

An accident is one thing; doing it in anger is another. Accidents happen, and I’d tell him not to worry. Because it was caused by anger, he must pay for a new window. That means he is working to pay you back, beyond normal chores, since family members take care of those tasks. On top of that, we need to teach that it’s not always your way and that we sometimes have to do things you don’t want to do. However, you can do that.

He must work to pay it off. It will technically affect his life. There are consequences, and you can’t just break things and not pay to fix them.

You tell him to help you clean up the broken glass, then you take away his favorite thing. After that, he has to pitch in with extra chores around the house to help cover the cost of the replacement.

If he gets an allowance, make him pay for it now. Or have him work it off as punishment. Talk to him immediately. Tell him you still love him, but you’re teaching him to be a man.

It's just a window, and it doesn't look like he tried to break anything. It's a good moment to talk about how we react to stuff we don't want to do. And Mom needing help with groceries that's a privilege not everyone has.

Have him fix it while you’re supervising we grew up really poor, and my dad taught me how to fix things, so now, as an adult, I can handle some stuff around the house. I wouldn’t get angry with him; make it a teachable moment.
