Am I failing as a dad if I have no legacy to leave my kids?

I’m not sure what to call it or how to start describing it, but lately I’ve been stuck in my own head and realized I won’t have much to hand down to my kids. I mean, no legendary “awesome” stories—no generational treasure trove. We own nothing as epic as the stuff our grandparents passed on. Sure, we experience acts of compassion and kindness, but is that the only thing we want to be remembered for? “Dad helped put band‑aids on me.” I’m a diesel mechanic by trade, marching home to a cookie‑cutter house with my wife and kids. I’m not crafting a legacy they can bra about. I feel like I’ve flunked.

tbh, the best thing Mom did was leave us nothing. My sibs & I would've fought over it.. We spent every moment focusing on our fam & her legacy 😊

I keep focuing on this phrase in my journey and share it with my kids: comparison steals joy. Don’t waste time worrying about what you can’t give them or what you can’t do. That makes you miss what’s right in front of you. You may lack stories about everything you’ve “done,” but you can create new ones with your boys. We can always improve; use this as motivation, but don’t lose the joy you already have.

2.) Seek situations to be awesome. Check out my daughter’s custom 3D‑printed valentines. Awesome doesn’t mean what you think. Play games with your kids. Workout. Do man stuff.

Awesome happens, but it requires effort.

I assure you the KIDS won’t remember the trinkets or care about the LAND or PROPERTY. When you’re gone, they will want their DADDY to come back, put a BAND‑AID on their knee, not give them a house.

You’re trying to live up to the expectations you’ve set for yourself, not the expectations your children have for you.

My kids are grown they are my legacy.

If I could do it again, I’d create a legacy of giving back. We’d pick a regular day to volunteer with the less fortunate.

I’d start traditions Monday‑night game night, lights off, screens down, pure family time.

And on Thanksgiving we’d serve those in need instead of rushing into Black Friday shopping.

It is never too late. Continue to be a father who listens and cares. Good karma may arrive when you least anticipate it. Even if it does not, you have been a father who was present for his children, and that is of greater significance.

Times have changed since our grandparents’ era. Wages are lower and everything costs more. Many of us can’t afford items worth passing down. You still have a house. I just signed a lease, moved into a modest two‑bedroom apartment, and sold my “nice” cars. Let’s count the blessings we have!

Some kids don’t even have a dad that comes home. Met my dad for the first time at 19. tbh I feel like u aren’t giving urself enough credit. The most important thing u can give kids is a loving environment that lets them grow. U’re doing great and can still keep mentoring them and growing 🌱.

It’s easier said than done, but you must stop comparing yourself to others or dwelling on what you aren’t doing.
You have a HOME, a SOLID JOB, you’re home every night, and you’re a GREAT DAD so many people would love to be in your spot.
So many kids would love to have a dad like you.
Focus on the LOVE you share with one another and not on what you lack.
