I think some child psychologist said around four years. Mine are 5.5 years apart, and it's a bit too much.

Two years… It used to be earlier… Had three close together back in the good old 90s, and it worked great… Then the rules changed housing market, parental leave, job market all of it affects family finances now. If you can manage it, it’s probably better to have them close together, if Mom can handle it… These damn diapers and preschool years with kids getting sick all the time. If you have more kids with bigger gaps between them, you’re cutting your own life short, and a lot of people end up separating because no one can keep up in the long run. I’m telling you, the closer the kids are, the easier life gets later on. I had two more kids in 2010–12, damn, it was so easy to become a dad again… You’ve got the answers figured out.

We have a 1.5 year gap between the two oldest, a 3 year gap between the second and third, and a 4 year gap between the third and fourth.
My dad is in the middle of a set of 11 siblings, and there’s a 44 year gap between the youngest and the oldest (though not all with the same mother), so I guess the idea of an “optimal” gap is pretty relative depending on what you think.
