How will my child react to a new sibling during shared custody?

My ex, with whom I have a great relationship, decided to expand our family through IVF, and while I support her decision, it's been an adjustment. Our 6-year-old has expressed excitement about having a sibling, which brings me joy, though I can't help but think about how this might change our dynamics.

I find myself wondering how our child will navigate this new reality. With shared custody and living close, I worry they might prefer staying with their mom to be near the new sibling. Yet, I also hope they might seek more one-on-one time with me, craving the attention they're used to.

Thankfully, preschool hours won't be an issue, but I'm more concerned about the emotional balance. I'm trying to prepare myself for any scenario, whether it's a smooth transition or a period of adjustment.

You don’t need to worry. Routine and kids go hand in hand whether it’s every other week or some other schedule, just stick with it. You’d be surprised how strongly kids feel emotions. Your child will miss you a lot and, of course, want to be with you.

Don’t give in and try to "buy love" with toys or ice cream. If you notice in the future that your child is missing their little sibling too much, plan fun activities together instead. Visit the library more often they usually have lots of events for kids or go to a park, a show, or something else fun. Those are the things that create lifelong memories and help build a strong relationship. It’ll all work out!

Don't worry. Your kid will also bring the sibling over for visits from time to time in the future. 😉

I understand your concern. My 13 year old sometimes chooses to stay a bit longer at her mom's we have every other week when we have a 9 month old baby here. It gets a bit chaotic with the baby, so I get why she wants to stay longer, even though it’s tough, of course. But this is a teenager and not a six year old, so it’s a bit different.
