How do I cope with my wife's esophageal cancer diagnosis and 4 kids?

Just found out my wife has esophageal cancer. We have four kids. I’m scared. Update: pathology is in, positive for esophageal adenocarcinoma. Back story: we all ended up getting a bad stomach bug. My wife then had extremely bloody stool, which prompted us to go in. Her appendix was removed and an endoscopy was done to find the source of the bleed. A tummor that ruptured was found directly above the stomach in the esophagus. We’re being referred to Rochester Mayo. The stage is currently unknown. We didn’t think much of it because she has other health issues, but now that we know what it is, her symptoms over the past year make more sense. Prior Symptoms: Chest pain, nausea, loss of appetite, anemia, iron deficiency, coughing especially before vomiting, fatigue.

Edit: Remove all sugar and processed foods from her diet immediately. Cancer feeds on them.

My brother lost his battle with esophageal cancer 11 days ago, since it had already spread to his lymph nodes and liver.

Take this time to show her how much she means to all fo you, and don’t let a single minute slip by.

If they catch it early enough, it can be beaten.

I’m wishing her all the best in this fight and hoping she feels the unconditional love from everyone who cares about her during this tough time.

I don’t wish this on my worst enemy! Please don’t give up and keep telling her everything will be okay. She needs positive, uplifting support from the family she loves most.

I have lost my grandmother and my mother to cancer, and I have faced my own cancer battle this past year.

It can feel overwhelming. Do yourself a favor and stay away from Doctor Google until you know more. Reading into everything too early can be terrifying and put you in the wrong mindset to fight this battle head‑on.

I have a very close family member experiencing a remarkably similar situation, and she has said nothing negative about the Mayo Clinic where she receives care. She was diagnosed with STAGE 4 brain and lung cancer with a one‑year life expectancy; it must now be 4.5–5 years.since she received that news. Stay strong. That does not mean suppressing your feelings. Open up to your wife she is navigating her own whirlwind, and having a partner by her side is worth its weight in gold.
